Stillington & Whitton

Industry & Business
A Railway Line causes a Geographical natural division of part of the residential area of the village from the industry but the village was first built by the Iron Works in the second half of the 1800’s, and that has caused a close affiliation between the two, with employment on the doorstep.
The village is fairly self sufficient with three industrial engineering employers, seven smaller business units, Post Office/Newsagents/Grocery Shop, Hairdressers, Takeaway, Auto Repair Garage, also several Self Employed business running from home (e.g. Home & Garden Service, Building, etc) not forgetting the Royal Pub  to meet the social needs.
Industrial Involvement
There has always been close affiliation between industry and residents.  In 2002 NEIR and Darchem Company MD’S got together to form Stillington Industrial Estate Action Groupthey then asked representatives from the other local Businesses, the Parish Council and Residents Ass. also the Police to join them to work toward the good of the whole community.
This arrangement had a significant impact on reducing ‘visiting’ criminal activities and Anti Social Behaviour, highlighting to the Police, the different needs in Rural Areas, that were considered an easy target by some. (car theft, poaching etc.) also the quarterly meetings were a good network for involving the business element in local activities. There was a progression towards greater involvement resulting in Darchem Engineering providing Project Management for the Playground construction, also providing Benches and Picnic tables for The Forest Park. Tours of their site and free annual support for the Village Roadshow Day. North East Iron Refinery organised a marvellous Firework Display with Food and Refreshments yearly, made Gates for the Church also did the physical job of hanging the flower baskets, which were provide by Endeavour Housing who built a new residential development here in 2006
The Industrialist are always on hand to help with advice and support, also advertising activities, this is greatly appreciated by the residents and forms a more effective community
