History
Constructed by a builder named Stephenson for the North of England Industrial Iron & Coal Co. Ltd. The Royal Hotel opened on May 13th 1876 as a 'Model Lodging House', leased to Mr John Redshaw for a period of 14 years at a fixed annual rent of £52.
In 1880 the lease was taken over by a director of the ironworks Mr Hogetts, and John Redshaw remained as a manager.
In 1928 Dorman & Long Ltd had taken over the Iron Works and leased the Hotel to John Smiths Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd. who later bought it in 1944 for £6000. The Royal Hotel remained with John Smiths as a Public House until 1991 when it was sold to Vaux Brewery as part of a package of 26 Public Houses around the North East. Vaux Brewery closed in 1999 and all its tennanted pubs were bought by the Pubmaster Pub Company which was part of the Cameron/Whitbread Group.
To date the Royal has only had 14 Licencees during its 133 year history.
